On Thursday, May 28th, Voice of American Immigration Fraud Victims visited Capitol Hill. We distributed a flyer to all 435 members of the House of Representatives. We focused on the fact that American women are being abused by VAWA since immigrant men are falsely claiming abuse to get their green card. Most people assume that only American men are being falsely accused, and this somehow makes it okay. If we can make people see that American women are being victimized by legislation meant to protect them, then we have the potential to have more people hear our voices. In addition to passing out flyers, we had six meetings on our schedule. We met with aides to two Representatives and four Senators. All were very interested in hearing our message. We have people on Capitol Hill talking about our issue. At one point, a Senator's aide mentioned that he had recently spoken to a Congressman's aide regarding our meeting. This bodes well for us! Everyone we spoke to really took notice to the approach we used. Focusing attention on women victims puts this in a different light. We are moving in the right direction. With VAWA coming up for reauthorization, as well as all the talk about immigration reform, we have two avenues open to us, and we could very well see some action towards the end of the year. |

Maxx PostPosted: Wed Jun 03, 2009 9:29 pm Post subject: Another issue that gets traction in these economically difficult times is that of a newly arrived immigrant collecting welfare benefits. Many without paying one dollar in income tax. Come into the US. Leave their husbands a week later and claim benefits that could be going to truly abused American women. I was told by a woman that THIS was the issue that frosted her. I hope this helps. Proud of you guys and gals doing this lobbying effort! |
